Acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, celebrated for grand cinematic spectacles like Padmaavat and Gangubai Kathiawadi, has landed in legal trouble with an FIR lodged against him in Bikaner. The complaint, filed by line producer Prateek Raj Mathur, accuses Bhansali and two associates of fraud, breach of trust, and misbehavior linked to the production of his much-anticipated upcoming project Love & War.

According to reports, Mathur claimed that he had been contracted to provide production services for the film during its Rajasthan schedule but alleged that payments were delayed, promises went unfulfilled, and unprofessional behavior occurred on set. He approached the court after repeated attempts at resolution reportedly failed. Following his petition, the Bikaner court directed local police to register a formal FIR against the filmmaker and his team.

The development has sent ripples across the industry, where Bhansali is known not only for his meticulous filmmaking but also for high standards on set. Love & War, which pairs Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal in a love triangle against the backdrop of war, has already been one of Bollywood’s most talked-about projects of 2025. The FIR has now added an unwelcome layer of controversy to its journey.

Industry insiders note that legal disputes are not uncommon in big productions, often arising from complex logistics, multiple vendors, and mounting budgets. However, given Bhansali’s stature and the film’s visibility, the case has drawn significant attention. Some commentators argue that such issues are often settled behind closed doors, and the fact that this matter has reached an FIR suggests either a serious grievance or an intensifying clash between production teams.

So far, neither Bhansali nor his production house has issued an official statement. Sources close to the filmmaker say he views the allegations as “baseless” and is likely to contest them legally. Trade analysts believe that while the FIR may not derail the film’s schedule immediately, it could affect its reputation and create hurdles in smooth promotion.

The timing is particularly sensitive: Love & War is expected to be a major awards contender and a global showcase for Bollywood. With this FIR in the spotlight, the film’s narrative outside the screen risks overshadowing the artistry within it. Whether the dispute is resolved quickly or drags on will determine how much it impacts Bhansali’s ambitious vision.
